So easy, so close, so Raro
Easy to reach, easy to love, impossible to forget. It’s no wonder Rarotonga is a favourite Kiwi destination.
Looking for a fun-filled, sun-drenched, hassle-free holiday? We’ve got four letters for you: R-A-R-O.
Rarotonga is a natural favourite holiday spot for Kiwis, and there’s an outstanding reason why. Besides the shimmering blue waters, jungle-clad peaks and laidback island vibe, there’s one thing that keeps Kiwis flying back again and again — it’s all just so easy!
In case you’re new to Raro, here’s a quick recap of what makes this Pacific playground so very special.
Backyard paradise
Sure, there’s an ocean between us, but with direct flights from Christchurch, Raro feels like it’s part of our own big backyard. Simply hop aboard Air New Zealand’s seasonal non-stop service (26 May – October 2026) and in less than 5 hours, you’ll touch down in paradise.
Not only is the island easy and quick to get to, it feels like home too. You’ll spot plenty of familiar food, beer and wine brands on the shelves, and because Rarotongans use the Kiwi dollar, you won’t even have to change currency. To make things even easier, there are accessible ATMs dotted around the island.
Small island appeal
Just 32 kilometres around, Rarotonga feels like one big resort. There’s a road that circles the whole island, and everybody drives on the left-hand side. Yep, easy! There are plenty of ways to get around – hire a car, jump on a scooter, hop on a bicycle or e-bike, or wave down the public bus for a spin around the island. With a full circuit taking just 45 minutes by car, you’re never more than 20 minutes from anywhere.
All around the island you’ll find tons of accommodation options to choose from. Holiday homes, baches, family-friendly resorts, eco-glamping and adults-only sanctuaries are dotted along the coastline. Each one offers something unique, so whatever your taste and budget you’re sure to find your perfect nook.
Lagoon life
The entire island is encompassed by a safe, warm lagoon that’s teeming with tropical fish, turtles and corals. Exploring is effortless: simply grab a kayak or stand-up paddle board from your accommodation, chuck on a snorkel and mask, or take off your jandals and wade in.
If you’re after a guided experience, Muri Beach features two lagoon cruises that include a glass-bottom boat ride, snorkelling, BBQ lunch on a motu and cultural entertainment. Or for an adrenalin rush, have a go at scuba diving, sea scooter safaris, jet skis, nighttime SUP tours, kite surfing and more.
Inland beauty
If you can tear your eyes away from the azure waters, you’ll discover jagged, jungle-clad peaks stretching into the sky. Head inland to explore the heart of Rarotonga in the way you most enjoy. From fast-paced rides on buggies, quads and mountain bikes, to exploring a range of hiking trails or cycling the island’s back roads at a leisurely pace, you’re free to choose your own adventure here.
The ultimate add-on
You may have been to Rarotonga already, but have you been to Aitutaki? Described as “the most beautiful lagoon” in the world by Lonely Planet, this outer island is just 50 minutes away on Air Rarotonga. Take a day trip or stay for a few nights and enjoy lagoon cruises, sailing tours, scuba diving, swimming with whales and more. Aitutaki is truly the icing on the cake of a sweet-as Raro holiday.
It's no wonder Rarotonga holds such a special place in the hearts of so many New Zealanders. So close to home, so easy to get around, and so full of things to appreciate and discover… Think of Raro as your tropical getaway and home away from home all rolled into one.
