Christchurch Airport announces new direct flights to Vanuatu with Solomon Airlines

South Island travellers will soon be able to swap winter woollies for tropical sunshine, with Solomon Airlines launching a new direct service from Christchurch to Port Vila (Vanuatu) from 1 July 2026.

Christchurch, New Zealand – South Island travellers will soon be able to swap winter woollies for tropical sunshine, with Solomon Airlines launching a new direct service from Christchurch to Port Vila (Vanuatu) from 1 July 2026.

The new route will be the first time there has been a commercial scheduled flight to Vanuatu from Christchurch, it will operate twice weekly on Thursday and Sunday departing Christchurch in the morning and will be flown by an Airbus A320-200. The direct flight is expected to take around four hours, delivering South Islanders straight into the heart of the South Pacific to a getaway packed with warm weather, adventure, and island hospitality.

The flight back from Port Vila to Christchurch will operate on Wednesday and Saturday in the afternoon, allowing for a full day in Vanuatu prior to returning.

With Vanuatu two hours behind New Zealand in winter, travellers can have breakfast at home and then touch down in time for a relaxed lunch at a seaside restaurant in Port Vila, all in one easy day.

Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson says the new route is a fantastic addition for Canterbury and the wider South Island.

“When the temperature drops and the rain jackets come out, it’s the perfect time to have a warm weather escape on the horizon. This direct service to Port Vila is a brilliant opportunity for South Islanders to enjoy an easy tropical break”.

“We’re excited to welcome Solomon Airlines to Christchurch Airport and to offer travellers another new option in the South Pacific.”

Solomon Airlines Chief Executive Officer Paul Abbot says the airline is proud to bring the new service to the South Island.

“We’re thrilled to launch direct flights between Christchurch and Port Vila, opening up a whole new gateway to the Pacific for Kiwi travellers,”

“Vanuatu is known for its incredible natural beauty, warm hospitality, and year-round tropical climate and is a vibrant alternative to more cluttered tourist destinations. This service makes it easier than ever for South Islanders to experience everything the islands have to offer, from snorkelling and diving, to markets, culture, and relaxation.”

CEO of the Vanuatu Tourism Office Adela Issachar Aru says.

"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome our friends from the South Island to discover the magic of Vanuatu. With our warm Ni-Vanuatu hospitality, stunning islands, rich culture and incredible food, Vanuatu offers a truly authentic Pacific experience just a short journey away. We can’t wait to share our home with South Islanders and create unforgettable holiday memories”.

Hot on the heels of Christchurch Airport’s announcement of direct flights to Rarotonga starting in May 2026 this new route adds to the Airport’s growing Pacific network and provides travellers with a convenient, direct link to one of the region’s most loved holiday destinations.
