Things to Do and See on the West Coast

A fascinating gold-mining history and age-old importance to Maori as the source of Pounamu (greenstone) have left the West Coast with a rich cultural history to complement the natural treasures of its remarkable landscape.  Take a guided walk of Fox or Franz Josef Glacier - heli-hiking and ice-climbing options are also available.  To learn more about days gone by, visit the recreated pioneering town, Shantytown at Greymouth.  Visit the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks at Paparoa National Park - high tide on a stormy day is the best time to witness the awesome power of the blowholes.  Whilst enjoying the great outdoors experience the many adventure activities on offer, from white water rafting and black water (cave) rafting to mountain biking and 4WD tours.

Getting There & Around the West Coast

Hokitika Airport offers daily flights from Christchurch.  Greymouth is located approximately 252 km from Christchurch via Arthur's Pass (a 3.5-hour drive).  Bus services operate regularly between Christchurch and the West Coast; while the TranzAlpine daily rail service is widely regarded are one of the world's best rail journeys.
