Things to Do and See in Southland & Stewart Island NZ

Visit the Southland Museum and Art Gallery to see New Zealand's largest breeding colony of Tuatara, a unique reptile that can live for over 100 years.  Catch a ferry to Stewart Island NZ where you can hike in Rakiura National Park, explore the quaint harbour settlement of Oban and spot wild kiwi.  View penguins, sea lions, seals and dolphins all at Nugget Point.

The unspoilt landscape of Southland region lends itself to enjoying outdoor adventure so join a local guide and go fishing for trout on the Matura River.  Hike the Hump Ridge Track at Tuatapere, a 3-day walk through rainforest.  Check out the Hokonui Moonshine Museum in Gore and revisit Southland's colourful 'moonshine' days.

Getting There & Around Southland & Stewart Island NZ

Invercargill Airport offers regular flights from Christchurch.  Daily flights operate from Invercargill to Stewart Island.  Invercargill is an 8.5-hour drive from Christchurch.  It is 3 hours, 10 minutes south of Dunedin on State Highway 1. Several coach companies offer regular services to the region.
