Keeping an eye on the stars

If you're one of those people who likes to lie on your back and watch the stars on a clear night, you should be planning to head to Lake Tekapo in October.

The Aoraki Mackenzie Starlight Festival will be held October 11 to 13 to celebrate the southern hemisphere's first International Dark Sky Reserve. Officially recognised by the International Dark-Sky Association, our reserve is the world's largest (4367 sq km), the first to be given gold tier status (the highest there is) and recognises the Mackenzie skies as essentially free of light pollution.

CIAL is sponsoring the festival and we know it'll be very popular. Some of the events already confirmed are presentations from NASA astronaut Marsha Ivins, Symphony Under The Stars, documentary screenings, exhibitions and visits to observatories.
