Jilly Murphy Memorial Scholarship

A $5000 scholarship is being offered to support a project or person which contributes to improved aviation safety in New Zealand, particularly in Canterbury.

Applications will open in October 2013 for the inaugural Jilly Murphy Memorial Scholarship for Aviation Safety. The scholarship is offered jointly by Christchurch Airport and Airways Corporation, in memory of Jilly Murphy, a member of the Christchurch Airways tower team who died in central Christchurch during the earthquake of February 22, 2011.

Jilly worked for Airways for 20 years as a highly skilled controller and was loved and respected by her colleagues at the airport. Aviation safety was very important to her and her family is supporting the scholarship because of its focus on that.

A memorial seat has been placed in her honour at the base of the Airways air traffic control tower at Christchurch Airport. A member of Jilly's family will help select the scholarship winner.
