Christchurch to Fiji and on to North America

An additional Christchurch - Nadi service is about to give South Islanders even more travel options in the middle of winter.

Fiji Airways currently operates a weekly Sunday departure and will  introduce a Tuesday service for the month of July 2014, working towards additional flights later.

Christchurch Airport CEO, Jim Boult says the flight is a win-win-win for the airport, Fiji Airways and the South Island.

"Fiji Airways is the only airline to operate a year-round direct service from Christchurch to Fiji, and has been flying from Christchurch to Fiji for more than 20 years, says Mr Boult. "The additional Fiji Airways service certainly reflects the strength in the Canterbury and South Island economies and the strong interest in travel to Fiji and North America.

"This is the first time since 2000 that Fiji Airways has operated so many frequencies from Christchurch to Fiji. The additional service provides South Islanders  with a brilliant opportunity to travel from Christchurch, and on to - or, of course, from the US to Christchurch via Fiji," says Mr Boult.

"The total market size of South Island residents travelling to Fiji or North America is almost 50,000 in the past 12 months - and growing. Fiji Airways has seen this opportunity and responded which is great news for South Island travellers.

"The increased frequency also provides greater options for exporters to Fiji and North America and is ideal scheduling for time-sensitive products," he says.

Stefan Pichler, Fiji Airways Managing Director & CEO says the supplementary service makes it easier for South Island passengers to fly direct to Fiji, and on to the US without an additional domestic New Zealand connection.

"The new service opens up our global network to South Islanders, because we are offering an additional weekly connection on to Los Angeles and Honolulu. The departure time has been chosen to not only appeal to Cantabrians, but the greater South Island market, with connections possible from over six South Island regional points."

Mr Pichler says the Fiji Airways team is confident the supplementary service between Christchurch and Fiji will prove popular and is working towards additional flights later.

About Fiji Airways: Founded in 1951, Fiji Airways is the national airline of Fiji. It aims to become the airline of choice of the South Pacific, and the purchase and introduction of three new re-branded "Fiji Airways" Airbus A330-200s to replace its fleet of Boeing B747-400s and B767s will be the capstone of the airline's success and turnaround from record losses just 3 years ago. From its hub at Nadi International Airport, Fiji Airways and its subsidiary Pacific Sun fly to 15 cities in 10 countries. Destinations include Australia, New Zealand, USA, Hong Kong, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Solomon Islands. Fiji Airways aircraft bring in over 64 percent of all visitors who fly to Fiji, and the two companies together employ over 900 employees, earn revenues of over F$675 million ($380m USD), and directly contribute a significant portion of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Fiji Airways rebranded from Air Pacific in June 2013. Visit www.fijiairways.com for more information.
