What's currently happening?

2010 has seen the work on the terminal development project progress in leaps and bounds. Both the main terminal building and its Regional Lounge extension are considerably changed week by week.

The front part of the building (facing the parking lot) is rapidly taking shape, and the triangular-shaped main entrance way can clearly be seen from a high perspective.

In the back half of the building (close to the old terminal), plant equipment is being positioned. Electrical, fire, heating and ventilation and other services are all being installed. Up on the top floor, the steel framework for the services rooms is well underway and the roof cladding is being put up. Many of the main items of plant infrastructure are in place, including two huge generators.

The baggage handling system is the single biggest piece of infrastructure equipment to be installed in the new terminal. Christchurch Airport is committed to ensuring that the system is well and truly tested and operating smoothly before the new terminal opens.

Hawkins Construction is still on target for completion of Stage 1 (the check-in hall and first floor retail precinct) by early 2011.

Regional Lounge Update

Construction of the Regional Lounge section of the terminal, which will service tubro-prop passengers and aircraft, has begun. The Regional Lounge will attach to the new main terminal building right where there is currently a temporary walkway. Over the next couple of months, there will be some changes to this temporary walkway. There will be an improved arrangement in a couple of months' time.
