Gas Pipe ruptured at Christchurch Airport

An external contractor accidentally ruptured a gas pipe near the International Terminal at Christchurch Airport this morning, causing a gas leak.

Chief Executive of Christchurch Airport (CIAL) Jim Boult said, “The leak occurred during construction work related to the International Terminal Expansion development at the north end of the terminal, however the leak was quickly isolated and the gas was closed off.

”CIAL went into limited emergency mode, evacuating affected areas in the International Terminal as a precautionary measure.  Emergency units were on hand for the incident, with no reported ill effects among the public.

Boult said, “While there was a gas smell in the terminal for about an hour, at no stage was anyone in danger. Our evacuation procedures were activated because safety is a high priority for us, and we would prefer to err on the side of caution.”

There has been a minor disruption to one flight, however all services at the airport are now functioning normally.
